Canggu Surf Guide: Breaks, Levels and Season
Last updated: October 2026
Canggu, north-west of Kuta, is a string of surf breaks along a few kilometres of black-sand coast. Some peaks are mellow and sandy, others break over reef or rock, and the whole area is one of the busiest surf zones in Bali. This guide explains who Canggu suits, what the waves are like, when to go and how to deal with the crowds.
At a glance
Level: beginner to advanced, depending on the break
Wave type: several beach breaks and reef or rock-bottom peaks
Best for: progressing surfers who want variety; longboarders
The waves: variety in a short stretch of coast
What makes Canggu special is choice. Within a short scooter ride you will find sandy beach breaks that are friendly for improvers, longer peelers that longboarders love, and faster peaks over reef or rocks that reward experienced surfers. Each break reacts differently to swell size, wind and tide, so the best spot changes from day to day.
Many waves here are shared between lefts and rights, and on medium swells there are long, rolling sections where you can practise trimming and first turns. On bigger days the outer peaks become powerful and are best left to confident surfers.
When to surf Canggu
Canggu works year-round. In the dry season, roughly April to October, morning winds are often offshore and the waves are clean early in the day. In the wet season, roughly November to March, the wind can turn onshore later in the morning, so early sessions matter even more. Our guide to the best time to surf in Bali explains how swell and wind change through the year.
Tide makes a big difference at the reef and rock-bottom peaks: some become shallow and sucky at low tide. If you are not sure, surf mid to high tide or ask a local coach.
Hazards in Canggu
- Crowds: Canggu line-ups can be packed, with surfers of every level and many rental boards. Collisions are the most common problem.
- Reef and rocks: some peaks break over reef or rocky bottoms. Know where you are surfing and consider booties.
- Currents: on bigger swells, currents pull along the beach and out through channels.
- Water quality after rain: in the wet season, run-off from rivers can affect water near outlets; many surfers avoid the water right after heavy rain.
Right-of-way rules really matter in crowded line-ups, so read our Bali surf etiquette guide before you paddle out.
Canggu for beginners
Complete beginners can learn in Canggu, but the busy line-ups and mixed bottoms make it less forgiving than Kuta. Most people progress faster by learning the basics on Kuta’s sand first, then moving to Canggu once they can paddle into green waves and steer a little. A coach helps here by choosing the right break and tide for your level, instead of sending you to the most crowded peak.
If you are still in your first week on a board, start with the beginner surf course and come to Canggu when you are ready for more variety.

Planning a session at Canggu
Good surf days at Canggu start before you reach the beach. Check the swell size and direction, the wind forecast and the tide times the evening before, and plan to arrive early, when the wind is usually lighter and the line-up quieter. Once you get there, sit on the sand for ten minutes and watch: where the waves are breaking, where surfers paddle out, where the water looks calm and moving out to sea (often a rip or channel), and how big the sets really are compared with the forecast. Parking and beach access can get busy in high season, so arriving early also makes the walk to the water easier.
Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest or long-sleeve top, because the tropical sun is strong even on cloudy mornings. Choose a board that matches your level rather than the conditions you hope for: a bigger, softer board is easier to paddle and catch waves on. Finally, be honest with yourself. If the waves look bigger or more powerful than you are used to, it is always fine to watch, surf a smaller spot or come back another day. Conditions in Bali change quickly with swell, wind and tide, and the ocean will still be there tomorrow.
