Balangan Surf Guide: A Scenic Left on the Bukit
Last updated: October 2026
Balangan is a beautiful cliff-backed beach on the west side of the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali. The main wave is a left that peels over reef, giving long, fun rides when the swell lines up. It is a favourite next step for surfers who have outgrown the whitewater but are not ready for Uluwatu. This guide covers the wave, the season, the hazards and the beginner angle.
At a glance
Level: intermediate; beginners only on small, high-tide days with a coach
Wave type: left-hand reef break
Best for: surfers who can already turn and want a longer, fun left
The wave: a long left over reef
Balangan’s main wave breaks over a reef shelf and peels to the left along the beach. On a good swell it offers long walls where you can link turns, and the outside can get fast and occasionally hollow. On smaller days the inside sections become more forgiving and suit progressing surfers who are confident on green waves.
The setting is one of the prettiest in Bali, with cliffs, a wide sandy beach and warungs looking straight onto the line-up.
When to surf Balangan
Balangan is best in the dry season, roughly April to October, when trade winds blow offshore on the west side of the Bukit. In the wet season the wind is often onshore here. Mid to high tide is usually more comfortable, because the reef gets shallow at low tide. For seasonal details, see our guide to the best time to surf in Bali.
Hazards at Balangan
- Shallow reef: especially at low tide. Avoid deep duck-dives and fall flat rather than diving.
- Rocks near the cliffs: be careful at the edges of the bay and when entering or exiting.
- Bigger swells: on large days the outside becomes powerful and is for experienced surfers.
- Crowds on good days: the take-off can get busy, so follow priority rules.

Balangan for beginners and improvers
Balangan is not a place for a first lesson, but it can be a great first reef experience. Once you can paddle into green waves, ride along the face and control your board on a sandy beach like Kuta, a coach can choose a small, high-tide day and bring you here. The goal is a positive first reef session: the right tide, small waves, booties if you need them, and someone watching from the water.
If you are not yet at that stage, start with a beginner surf course and progress from there.
Balangan among other Bali surf locations
Among Bali surf locations, Balangan sits in the middle: more demanding than Kuta, but far more approachable than Uluwatu or Padang Padang on the same coastline. Compare them all in our Bali surf spots guide, or read about Kuta, Canggu, Uluwatu, Padang Padang.
Planning a session at Balangan
Good surf days at Balangan start before you reach the beach. Check the swell size and direction, the wind forecast and the tide times the evening before, and plan to arrive early, when the wind is usually lighter and the line-up quieter. Once you get there, sit on the sand for ten minutes and watch: where the waves are breaking, where surfers paddle out, where the water looks calm and moving out to sea (often a rip or channel), and how big the sets really are compared with the forecast. Watch where other surfers paddle out and come in before you enter, as the safest channel can change with tide and swell.
Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest or long-sleeve top, because the tropical sun is strong even on cloudy mornings. Choose a board that matches your level rather than the conditions you hope for: a bigger, softer board is easier to paddle and catch waves on. Finally, be honest with yourself. If the waves look bigger or more powerful than you are used to, it is always fine to watch, surf a smaller spot or come back another day. Conditions in Bali change quickly with swell, wind and tide, and the ocean will still be there tomorrow.
