Surf Balance Training: Exercises to Improve Board Control
Kevin Dean’s Surf Coaching Methodology
Functional balance and posture training for beginner and advanced surfers
Renowned surf coach Kevin Dean emphasizes that rapid technical improvement happens when structured physical training is combined with playful engagement. One of the cornerstones of high-level surf coaching is detailed video analysis: analyzing footage allows surfers to see their real posture, identify balance flaws, and correct bad habits during dry-land training before paddling back out.
Essential Surf Balance & Stance Exercises
1. Balance Board & Resistance Band Stance Drill
Wrap a heavy elastic resistance band around the waist while standing in your natural surf stance on a balance board or wobble deck. A coach or workout partner pulls from various angles, creating dynamic perturbations. Maintain a low center of gravity with bent knees and an upright chest for 40 to 45 seconds. Complete 3 to 4 sets.
2. Backside Turn & Rotational Balance
This drill strengthens hip engagement and core stability during backside bottom turns and top turns. Adjust the tension and pulling angle to simulate wave face pressure pushing against your board.
3. Single-Leg Balance with High Knee Drives
Balance on one leg with a soft knee while driving the opposite knee high toward your chest. This activates the deep stabilizer muscles in your foot, ankle, and gluteus medius, improving one-footed recovery during unstable takeoffs.
4. Posterior Chain & Spine Strengthening
Strengthens the erector spinae, glutes, and upper back to support long paddling sessions without fatigue.
5. Lateral Hip & Adductor Mobility
Stretching and opening the inner thigh adductors and hip capsules allows you to compress into a deep crouch in the barrel and execute wide-stance recovery moves without tweaking a muscle.
6. Dynamic Weight Transfers (Rail-to-Rail Transitions)
Practice shifting weight smoothly from front foot (acceleration and trim) to back foot (pivoting and turning) with relaxed, fluid knees. Incorporate these drills into your weekly routine to build effortless board control for your next surf session!
