Best Time to Surf in Bali: Season Guide by Coast and Level
Last updated: October 2026
The short answer: you can surf in Bali all year round. The island sits in the path of consistent Indian Ocean swells, so there are waves in every month. What changes with the seasons is the wind, and the wind decides which coast is clean and which is blown out. This guide explains Bali’s dry and wet seasons, which coasts work when, what that means if you are a beginner, and how Surf Discovery plans lessons and camps through the year.
Quick summary: the dry season (roughly April to October) is the classic surf season, with offshore winds on the west coast and the Bukit Peninsula. The wet season (roughly November to March) brings shifting winds that favour the east coast. Beginners can learn in any month: the sandy beach breaks around Kuta pick up small, forgiving waves year-round.
Dry season vs wet season in Bali
Dry season: roughly April to October
This is the season most surfers plan around. South-east trade winds blow steadily, which means offshore winds on Bali’s west-facing beaches (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu) and on the famous reef breaks of the Bukit Peninsula (Balangan, Padang Padang, Uluwatu). The Southern Hemisphere winter also sends the most consistent and often the biggest swells, so June to August can see solid, powerful surf on the exposed reefs.
Good to know: the weather is sunnier and less humid, but this is also the busiest time on the island and in the water. Mornings are usually the cleanest; the wind can strengthen in the afternoon.
Wet season: roughly November to March
During the wet season the prevailing wind turns more westerly and is less predictable. The west coast can get onshore and choppy, especially later in the day, while the east coast (around Sanur, Keramas and Nusa Dua side breaks) gets its offshore conditions. Swells are generally smaller and less consistent than in mid-year, which many learners and improvers actually prefer.
Good to know: rain often comes in heavy, short bursts, frequently in the afternoon or overnight, with plenty of sunny hours in between. After heavy rain, water quality near river mouths and drains can drop for a day or two, so it is wise to avoid surfing right next to them.
Shoulder months
The changeover periods (around March to April and October to November) can be some of the nicest times to visit: fewer crowds, glassy mornings with light winds, and both coasts can have good days. Conditions vary from year to year, so treat season boundaries as a guide rather than a rule.
Which coast works when
- West coast (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu): works year-round for swell; cleanest in the dry season with morning offshores. In the wet season, aim for early sessions before the wind picks up.
- South / Bukit Peninsula (Balangan, Padang Padang, Uluwatu, Bingin): the dry-season heartland. Reef breaks come alive with south-west swell and trade winds. Mostly for intermediate and advanced surfers.
- East coast (Sanur, Keramas, Nusa Dua side): the wet-season option, when westerly winds blow offshore here. Many of these waves break over reef and suit experienced surfers.
- Far west (Medewi and beyond): a longer drive, best on dry-season swells; popular for guided surf trips.

What the seasons mean for beginners
If you are learning, the season matters much less than the spot. Beginners need soft, small waves over sand, not perfect reef barrels. Kuta’s long sandy beach breaks are often the most consistent beginner waves on the island: they pick up swell in every month, there is no reef underfoot, and on most days there is a section of small whitewater close to shore.
- Dry season: cleaner, more organised waves in the morning, but bigger swells can make some days too strong for first-timers. A coach will pick the right section and tide.
- Wet season: swells are often smaller and gentler, which suits first lessons well; you mainly need to plan around wind and the occasional downpour.
- Every season: rip currents are the main hazard on beach breaks. Surf between the flags and with someone who reads the beach daily.
In practice, the best time to learn to surf in Bali is simply when you can come. Book lessons for your first days rather than waiting for a “perfect” season.

FAQ: best time to surf in Bali
What is the best month to surf in Bali?
For experienced surfers, the dry season from about May to September is the classic choice, with consistent swell and offshore winds on the west coast and Bukit reefs. For beginners, any month works because Kuta’s beach breaks have small waves year-round.
Can you surf in Bali during the rainy season?
Yes. The wet season (roughly November to March) still has surf every day somewhere on the island. The east coast often gets offshore winds, and the west coast is usually best early in the morning.
When is the best time to learn to surf in Bali?
Any time of year. Learners need small waves over sand, and Kuta has them in both seasons. The wet season’s often smaller swells can be very friendly for first lessons.
When are the waves biggest in Bali?
Usually around June to August, when Southern Hemisphere winter storms send the strongest swells. These days suit advanced surfers on the reefs; beginners stay on sheltered beach-break sections.
Does Surf Discovery run lessons all year?
Yes. We teach in Kuta year-round and run courses and surf camps in both the dry and wet seasons, choosing spots and times to match daily conditions.
