To anyone currently planning their vacation, wondering if they should learn to surf, which surf school to pick, and how many lessons to take—I was in your exact shoes. Why Bali? Because Bali has world-class surf conditions with no harsh rainy season, highly professional surf schools, and incredible value.

Bali offers perfect beginner and intermediate waves close to shore. Why surfing? If you want sun, warm ocean, and an active adventure rather than just lying on a beach towel, surfing is unbeatable. But if you want to truly get hooked, you need to learn from real pros and take at least 6 lessons. The first three build your foundation in the white water, and the next three take you out on guided surf trips to real green ocean waves. Looking back, choosing Surf Discovery was the best decision I made.

I immediately skipped the cheap beach-boy instructors in Kuta. Sure, they can surf, but they won’t properly break down biomechanics or wave theory because their model depends on keeping you coming back. Comparing four surf schools, Surf Discovery won me over instantly: while other schools said ‘lesson tomorrow!’, Surf Discovery advised waiting two days until ocean conditions were genuinely safe and optimal for learning. That level of honesty and responsibility is rare.

The entire experience was fantastic. A welcoming, friendly community at the school, true professional coaches, and the ability to borrow training surfboards between lessons to practice independently. Today I’m writing this review from Cloud 9 in Siargao, Philippines—and because of the solid ocean knowledge and safety foundation Surf Discovery gave me, I feel confident navigating lineups, currents, and reef breaks anywhere in the world. My surf journey began a year ago. For most of my life, I was the ultimate couch potato—sports and extreme activities were completely foreign to me. I couldn’t even swim properly, and diving underwater only happened while holding my nose shut!

On my first trip to Bali, I took 4 lessons. Although I didn’t reach the outside lineup back then, it sparked a deep fire in me. I knew with 100% certainty that I would return. Throughout that entire year, I transformed myself: I did push-ups, trained my core, began running 5 km twice a week, and joined a swimming pool to learn a proper freestyle stroke.

When I returned to Bali, a friend recommended Surf Discovery. Over 5 coached lessons and 2 independent sessions with Nikita and Maxim, my progression exploded. By lesson three, I was out at the reef lineup catching real open-face waves! The coaches gave me total confidence in the water. Maxim would spot the exact wave for me and yell ‘Paddle, Nastya, go!’, pushing me past my mental limits. Nikita’s lecture on surf history and Polynesian ocean culture brought everything together: surfing is a true mind-body practice that helps you conquer fear. Today I can swim confidently in the ocean, dive under waves, read swell sets, and surf down the line. I proved to myself that anything is possible!

This was my very first time on a surfboard. The pre-surf briefing gave us an incredible amount of essential information about currents, swells, and wave mechanics.
