The secret lies deep underwater in the Nazaré Canyon (Canhão da Nazaré), the largest submarine gorge in Europe. This underwater chasm stretches nearly 170 kilometers along the coast, plunging to depths of up to 5,000 meters (over 16,000 feet).

As powerful North Atlantic winter swells travel toward the coast, the canyon acts like a funnel. Swell traveling through the deep canyon maintains high speed, while swell over the shallower continental shelf slows down. When these two wave fronts converge near the headland of Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, they refract and amplify each other, creating constructive wave interference that spikes the wave face into gigantic peaks.

Garrett McNamara and the Big Wave Explosion

In November 2011, Hawaiian big wave pioneer Garrett McNamara put Nazaré on the global map by towing into a historic 78-foot (23.8m) wave at Praia do Norte, earning a Guinness World Record and the Billabong XXL Award.
